The Politics of Clear Thinking

All of us are getting tired of the political fighting between the left and right. We crave leaders who will think clearly instead of thinking with poll numbers. What follows is clear thinking from my brother, attorney Cornel Walker:

Covid-19 gives us pause to learn and change.

  • My hope is that our federal and state officials will increase medical benefits for the most vulnerable:
    • including those workers who are considered essential
    • that a pandemic response team will be a priority and will be made permanent.
  • I feel the cost of these and other changes must be paid for by the wealthy, whether corporations or individuals, by setting a tax rate at a minimum of 33% of income
  • I further hope that the wage for all workers will move to a minimum of $15 per hour and that health care benefits must be offered by employers.
  • That the wealthy not receive any tax deductions until after 33% of their income has been paid.
  • Limit CEO pay and the pay of officers and directors to no more than 50 times that of the companies lowest paid worker.
  • We must elect leaders who value people’s lives and their living conditions, who value science and the knowledge of doctors and scientists more than getting reelected.
    • Elected officials who credit themselves and are opportunistic just to stay in power are not leaders.
  • We must find leaders who value people more than corporations, and corporate profit.
    • Today’s lead article in the New York Times points out that the actual pay of the average worker has fallen by three thousand ($3000.00) when inflation, the cost of health care, and the cost of food and housing are factored.
  • Finally, we must elect leaders who will be truthful with the people of this country.

A conversation must begin between lawmakers and the “average” constituents, not just the wealthy and not just those who share an official’s political agenda.

This is an addition from me, John Ingram Walker, MD: We must support term limits: No more than two terms for the House of Representatives; no more than one term for the Senate. The only thing that interests members of Congress is getting re-elected. Members of Congress determine decisions by polls only. They care not one iota for what is best for us, the people.
