How to Defeat Perfectionism

1- Become Aware

Pay attention to the way you think. Awareness allows you to change your self-talk.

2- Focus on the Positives

You’ve got to accentuate the positive
Eliminate the negative
Latch on to the affirmative
Don’t mess with Mister In-Between

3- Allow Yourself to Make Mistakes

If we don’t fail, we can’t learn. Failure is the successful identification of what doesn’t work.

4- Set SMART Goals

Be SMART: Specific; Measurable; Achievable; Realistic; Time limited.

5- Learn From Constructive Criticism

Feedback is the breakfast of champions.

6- Put in Your Best Effort

There is no such thing as “perfect,” but we can be proud of doing our best.

7- Focus on Meaning Over Perfection

Love your work, learn from your work, laugh at the little absurdities along the way.

8- Avoid Procrastination

Perfectionists avoid projects because they fear their effort won’t be good enough. Award yourself for getting started. Use the swiss cheese approach: take tiny bites in a big project. Ride the curve–some will do better than you; othrs will do worse, but you will be riding the wave toward the Mia Tia waiting on the sandy beach

9- Cut Out Negative Influences

Avoid media that makes others look and seem perfect–they aren’t.

10- Use Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive behavior therapy is as simple as ABC; A–Activating event; B–belief about the event; C–consequences of the belief. Change your belief about the activating event.
