Four Noble Truths Revisited

Just about every religion contains some truth. Only Christianity contains the complete truth.

Let’s look at Buddhism, for example. I believe that Christians would agree with the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism as stated in simple terms:

  1. Life is difficult (Suffering exists)
  2. Suffering arises from attachment to worldly desires (wanting things).
  3. Suffering ceases when attachment to worldly things ceases.
  4. Freedom from suffering is possible by practicing seven of the eight steps in the Eightfold Path.

And I believe most Christians would agree with all but the last point in the Eightfold Path:

  1. Right view—focus on eternity.
  2. Right resolve—contemplation of the impermanence of life by cultivating an environment of loving kindness and compassion.
  3. Right speech—no lying, no rude speech, no gossip.
  4. Right Conduct—no killing or injuring, no stealing.
  5. Right livelihood—being content in all things, no greediness.
  6. Right effort—love others as we love ourselves.
  7. Fight mindfulness—being conscious of what one is doing.
  8. Right concentration—to get inner peace seek Nirvana—become nothing.

The eighth step, right concentration, is where Christianity differs from Buddhism.

Where Buddhist believe the last step to joy is sinking into oblivion, Christians believe that following Jesus is The Way to eternal life.

Becoming more and more like Christ and serving him brings an abundant life.
