Do You Really Want to Live a Long Time?

I jot down interesting things I read and hear. Glancing through that notebook this morning I saw this frightening entry: Over half of the US baby-boomers will live to see their 100th birthday. Unfortunately, I failed to record the source, but nonetheless that sentence alarms me.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live to be one-hundred afflicted by all the doddering decrepitude and declining debilitation that goes with it.

Remember Eos, the goddess of dawn, who asked Zeus to grant Tithonus immortality, but did not think to request eternal youth along with it. As a result Tithonus withered into an aged cicada babbling continuously.

As for me, I’ll take an early exit to heaven any day.
