Quo Vadis?

Where we go in life is determined by these factors:
  1. Deterministic nonperiodic flow. Tiny differences in input can quickly become overwhelming disparities in output. A butterfly stirring its winds in Muleshoe can affect a weather pattern that causes a storm in Lufkin. A man pushes a snooze button on his alarm clock. He leaves his house 30 seconds later than usual. Walking from the parking garage, a wrench falls from a construction site above knocking him dead. Little did he know that 30 seconds was a half-minute too late. Predictions often don’t have the expected results.
  2. Nature (hard drive) and nurture (software). According to the epigenetic theory our genetics interacting with environment makes us who we are. Changes in the genome can occur through the impact of environmental factors on the expression of genes. A person who has genes for music and schizophrenia may develop schizophrenia in a terrible environment or if exposed to a musical environment this talent becomes expressed.
  3. Cultural influences. American kids believe success results from talent. Japanese kids believe success results from tenacity.
  4. Values can be a crucial barometer for conduct. Consider the values Abraham Lincoln possessed versus the values of Bernie Madoff.
  5. Psychological factors. Those who expect good outcomes create an environment that fosters success.
Take home message: Our environment is crucial in determining life outcomes.
